Designed and built by Bent Metal in collaboration with Tract Landscaping, we’re incredibly proud that a stunning metal sculpture has made its way home to Matilda. But what’s the story behind the piece? Let’s delve in.

Meet Euphrosyne

The name ‘Euphrosyne’ takes its roots from Greek Mythology, after the ancient goddess of good cheer, merriment and joy. It’s the perfect name to embody the character of our neighbourhood and what life at Matilda is all about – positivity, growth and new beginnings. Renowned artist David Wood drew on inspiration from Donnybrook’s iconic rolling hills to create this towering 5.5-meter masterpiece. Its large expressive form is intended to be a balance and connection between the old and the new, cementing Matilda in its own unique identity. Made from natural and recycled materials, forged and fabricated by mild steel construction and hot-dip galvanised for durability, this is a sculpture that’s built to last, proudly welcoming residents and visitors at the entrance to our growing community.

Rooted in nature

At the very heart of this design is the wattle tree. Whilst its vibrant yellow is reminiscent of the sun and the warmth it brings, the wattle is itself a symbol of resilience and hope as it thrives in harsh conditions and regrows after bushfires. It also carries a deeper historical significance. As Australia’s national floral emblem and taking pride of place on the Australian coat of arms since 1912, it’s often used in citizenship ceremonies and synonymous with the Australian spirit.

The colour palette? It’s inspired by the gorgeous natural landscape of Donnybrook. Burnished copper is the primary tone, created from steel that weathers from brown to orange over time. Dark verdigris green and gold highlights are reminiscent of the native grasses, eucalypts and wattle blossom found in the areas surrounding Matilda.

Bringing the sculpture to life

On Tuesday 7th July, we welcomed the magnificent metal sculpture to Matilda. This masterpiece made its way from Bent Metal studios to the estate by crane with the careful planning and prepping onsite from Tract Landscaping, and it was perfectly installed in a matter of hours! It’s amazing what a passionate team can do when they come together, and we couldn’t be prouder of the final outcome.
