As you embark on your journey to build a new home at Matilda, Donnybrook’s newest community, it’s only fitting to delve into the rich history that has shaped this suburb to date. From its Irish roots to exciting plans and investments in the future, Donnybrook certainly has a tale worth telling.

Donnybrook – where it all began

Before Donnybrook as we know it today, the area was initially known as ‘Rocky Waterholes,’ a name bestowed upon the area by European settlers, inspired by a nearby cattle run and natural feature near Merri Creek. In the mid 19th century, the arrival of Irish settlers marked a significant milestone, with the locality renamed to Donnybrook, likely a nod to the Donnybrook Parish in Dublin.

Settled in 1840, the region flourished with numerous large cattle and sheep runs. Donnybrook’s strategic proximity to the bustling Sydney Road facilitated its transformation into a crucial coach stop, especially during the frenzied days of the gold rush. The suburb experienced a boom during this period, providing essential services to those seeking fortunes in the goldfields.

In a pivotal moment in 1874, Donnybrook underwent a significant transformation. The original part of the town, situated along Sydney Road, was renamed, becoming Kalkallo. Simultaneously, the newer section near the railway line retained the name Donnybrook, symbolising the evolving identity of the suburb.

Dairying then emerged as a cornerstone of the local economy, sustaining the community until World War II, when the landscape transitioned to cattle grazing.

The promising present – a growing community

Fast forward to 2024, and there’s no doubt Donnybrook is really starting to come into its own, quickly becoming one of the most popular new suburbs in the evolving northern fringe. Today, it is home to a diverse community, with a mix of young families, professionals, and long-time residents. The suburb’s friendly atmosphere fosters a sense of belonging, making it an ideal location for those seeking a close-knit community to call home.

With regional Victoria right on its doorstep, Donnybrook offers homebuyers the perfect balance between city and country – and an unparalleled opportunity to swap the hustle and bustle for their own piece of heaven.

But living in Donnybrook doesn’t mean forsaking access to good services and amenities! One of Melbourne’s most family-friendly suburbs, it’s an ideal place to put down roots with everything families need close by. Not only does the area boast some fantastic schools, but it’s also well-supported in terms of medical, recreational and retail services, with the Highlands Shopping Centre and Merrifield City both just down the road. Commuting to Melbourne’s CBD is also easily accessed via the nearby Hume Freeway or Donnybrook train station, each only 3km away.
